More about this artwork

Dive into the serene pastoral world crafted by George Inness with his evocative painting "Cows By A Stream." This artwork draws viewers into a gentle landscape where subtlety of tone and light seamlessly converge. Central to the painting, Inness places several cows peacefully grazing by a leisurely stream, evoking a sense of tranquil coexistence with nature. The composition features lush trees on either side of the canvas, their rich green hues contrasting beautifully with the soft, dreamy sky above. The reflections in the water add a mesmerizing depth to the scene, blurring the lines between the tangible and the reflected, enhancing the overall sense of peace and stillness. In the background, the rolling hills shrouded in mist give way to the horizon, suggesting a vast, unfolding landscape that invites contemplation and inward reflection. George Inness (May 1, 1825 – August 3, 1894) was a prominent American landscape painter.

Now recognized as one of the most influential American artists of the nineteenth century, Inness was influenced by the Hudson River School at the start of his career. He also studied the Old Masters, and artists of the Barbizon school during later trips to Europe. There he was introduced to the theology of Emanuel Swedenborg, which was significant for him; he expressed that spiritualism in the works of his maturity (1879–1894).
