More about this artwork

Théophile Alexandre Steinlen's poignant work, "Retour au Foyer" (Return to Home), created around 1918, captures the somber aftermath of World War I through a deeply emotional and humanizing lens. The artwork, executed with a mastery of line and shading, depicts a family ravaged by the war, making their way through a desolate landscape. The rising or setting sun in the background casts long shadows, suggesting either the dawning of a new day or the closing of a difficult journey, symbolizing hope or exhaustion respectively. At the focal point of the composition stands a group of figures. A man, wearing a turban, supported by a crutch and surrounded by three female figures, conveys a sense of weariness and resilience. The women and a child beside him share expressions of sorrow and fortitude, encapsulating a narrative of loss and survival. The somber tones and the handling of the figures’ drapery emphasize their vulnerability and the harsh reality they face.Adding a layer of narrative depth, Steinlen includes sketches of individual faces along the borders of the main scene. These sketches seem to represent additional characters in the story, perhaps memories of loved ones or echoes of those lost, reinforcing the theme of remembrance."Retour au Foyer" not only reflects Steinlen's skill as an artist but also his acute awareness of social issues and his empathy for human suffering.

Théophile Alexandre Steinlen, was a Swiss-born French Art Nouveau painter and printmaker.

Born in Lausanne, Steinlen studied at the University of Lausanne before taking a job as a designer trainee at a textile mill in Mulhouse in eastern France. In his early twenties he was still developing his skills as a painter when he and his wife Emilie were encouraged by the painter François Bocion to move to the artistic community in the Montmartre Quarter of Paris. Once there, Steinlen was befriended by the painter Adolphe Willette who introduced him to the artistic crowd at Le Chat Noir that led to his commissions to do poster art for the cabaret owner/entertainer, Aristide Bruant and other commercial enterprises.
