More about this artwork

Henri Le Sidaner's enchanting work from around 1938, "Les Maisons Sur La Rivière" (The Houses on the River), draws the viewer into a serene, pastel-hued world that resonates with quiet and harmony. This painting expertly captures a picturesque scene along a river, likely inspired by the gentle landscapes of France where Le Sidaner often found his muse.In this landscape, a river snakes through the composition, flanked on either side by quaint houses whose reflections shimmer on the water's surface, enhancing the dreamlike quality of the scene. The soft, dynamic brushstrokes bring to life the lush foliage and blooming flowers, adding a textural depth that makes the scene pulse with gentle life. The architectural elements, like the charming stone bridge with its elegant arches, contribute to a sense of enduring peace and stability.Le Sidaner is known for his unique blend of impressionism and intimism, and in "Les Maisons Sur La Rivière," he masterfully employs light and color to evoke a mood that is both introspective and inviting. As dusk appears to settle in, warm lights glow from within some houses, suggesting the cozy life within, while casting a gentle luminance that contrasts with the twilight. This painting not only showcases Le Sidaner's love for soft palettes and subtle interplays of light but also his ability to turn an everyday landscape into a verdant, mystical haven.

Henri Eugène Augustin Le Sidaner (7 August 1862 – 14 July 1939) who was a contemporary of the Post-impressionists, was an intimist painter known for his paintings of domestic interiors and quiet street scenes. His style contained elements of impressionism with the influences of Édouard Manet, Monet and of the Pointillists discernible in his work. Le Sidaner favoured a subdued use of colour, preferring nuanced greys and opals applied with uneven, dappled brushstrokes to create atmosphere and mysticism. A skilled nocturne painter, he travelled widely throughout France and Europe before settling at Gerberoy in the Picardy countryside from where he painted for over thirty years.

Le Sidaner's paintings and pastels were widely collected throughout his career. His seductive views of the gardens he created in the ruins of the medieval fortress at Gerberoy, with their recently vacated tables dappled in sunlight and overhung by roses, have cemented his reputation as a unique artist who does not fit easily into an art movement.
