More about this artwork

Jan Toorop's iconic piece "Catalogusomslag met ridder te paard" (Catalog Cover with Knight on Horseback) from July 1892 vividly captures the essence of artistic dynamism that defined his work during the late 19th century. This woodcut image features a bold and energetic depiction of a knight astride a robust steed, rendered in a style that exemplifies Toorop's fascination with lines and motion, a hallmark of the Art Nouveau movement. The image is structured with a brilliant use of contrast and simplified form, showcasing the knight exiting through a large, arched gateway, suggesting a narrative of adventure and chivalry. The silhouette of a castle forms part of the background, which helps to frame the central figure and adds a layer of depth to the composition. In "Catalogusomslag met ridder te paard," Toorop's expert manipulation of black and white patterns not only enhances the visual drama of the scene but also reflects his ability to convey movement and tension through static images. This work is a stunning example of Toorop's graphical skill and his contribution to the visual arts during a time of vibrant artistic exploration.

Jan Toorop (1858–1928) was a 19-century Dutch-Javanese painter who extensively experimented with different artistic styles ranging from Realism, Impressionism, Symbolism and Art Nouveau to Pointillism. He was famous for using highly stylized slim figures and dynamic lines that were influenced by Indonesian motifs and curvilinear lines. His most famous poster artwork “Delft Salad Oil”, commissioned by The Dutch Oil Company, became so iconic that the Dutch Art Nouveau painting style is given the nickname "the salad oil style". Despite the fact that Toorop's expertise was in producing designs for marketing and advertisements, he also produced a number of fine art pieces that dealt with darker subjects including the human physche and emotions.
