More about this artwork

Delve into the picturesque tranquility of Joseph Farington's sublime creation, "Lodore Rocks — Fall & Cottage — Distance." This enchanting painting captures the essence of nature's untouched beauty, harmoniously blending rugged landscapes with gentle pastoral scenes. In the foreground, the artist masterfully depicts a serene lake reflecting the soft light of an overcast sky. The quiet waters gently kiss the banks, where a picturesque scene unfolds: cattle graze peacefully under the watchful gaze of a shepherd, while a boat with figures gently rows through the calm lake.Dominating the background are the majestic Lodore Rocks, towering dramatically and enveloped in a haze that adds an air of mystery to the scene. The rocky formations rise steeply, contrasting with the lush, verdant trees that dot the landscape and frame the painting, guiding the viewer’s eye through this tranquil vista.A cottage, subtly nestled among the trees, suggests a human presence living in harmony with nature, adding a layer of warmth to the cool, gentle tones of the overall palette. This artwork not only showcases Farington’s skill in depicting natural beauty but also evokes a sense of calm and reflection, inviting viewers to pause and appreciate the serene world it portrays.

Joseph Farington RA was an 18th-century English landscape painter and diarist.

Three of his brothers—William, Henry, and Richard—were "employed in the naval service of the East India Company". Edward died of yellow fever when he was 32. Robert attended Brasenose College and became vicar of St George in the East, London (whose advowson was held by Brasenose). George Farington became a painter, like Joseph himself.
