More about this artwork

"Lodore Rocks — Fall & Cottage" by Joseph Farington is an enchanting depiction of a serene landscape, showcasing Farington's delicate attention to detail and mastery in capturing the essence of the British countryside. The artwork portrays a tranquil scene framed by the dramatic and rugged beauty of the Lodore Rocks in the Lake District. Dominated by shades of soft greens and blues, the painting invites the viewer to gaze into the distance, where a humble cottage nestles subtly among the lush vegetation, suggesting a harmonious coexistence with nature. In the foreground, the artist skillfully presents a wide, gentle river, possibly hinting at the Derwent River, which stretches out towards the viewer, dotted with small figures in boats, adding a touch of lively human activity. The expansive sky above, scattered with gentle clouds, complements the overall calmness and scale of the landscape.

Joseph Farington RA was an 18th-century English landscape painter and diarist.

Born in Leigh, Lancashire, Farington was the second of seven sons of William Farington and Esther Gilbody. His father was the rector of Warrington and vicar of Leigh. Three of his brothers—William, Henry, and Richard—were "employed in the naval service of the East India Company". Edward died of yellow fever when he was 32. Robert attended Brasenose College and became vicar of St George in the East, London (whose advowson was held by Brasenose). George Farington became a painter, like Joseph himself.
