More about this artwork

We are delighted to showcase the serene beauty of Ľudovít Čordák's 1914 painting, "Pod Slaneckým hradom." This oil on canvas captures a picturesque scene beneath the shadows of the imposing Slanec Castle, nestled amidst the lush greenery of East Slovakia. The foreground of the painting is dominated by a vibrant garden, bursting with the lively colors of blooming flowers. The garden, meticulously maintained, leads the viewer’s eye toward a quaint cottage with a classical red roof, symbolizing the rustic charm and simplicity of rural life during the era. The serene composition is flanked by towering trees, which frame the scene and add a sense of depth and tranquility. In the distance, Slanec Castle rises majestically atop a densely wooded hill, its outlines gently blurred, perhaps suggesting the distance or the misty atmosphere typical of the region. The castle serves as a majestic backdrop, a silent witness to the centuries and the enduring spirit of the landscape.Čordák’s use of soft, earthy tones and his skillful play with light and shadow imbue the painting with a warm, inviting glow, encouraging the viewer to contemplate the peaceful coexistence between man and nature."Pod Slaneckým hradom" is more than just a visual delight; it is a testament to the timeless beauty of Slovakia’s landscapes and a reflection of the nation's rich cultural heritage.

Ludwig Deutsch was an Austrian painter who settled in Paris and became a noted Orientalist artist.

Details of Ludwig Deutsch's life are obscure. He was born in Vienna in 1855 into a well-established Jewish family. His father Ignaz Deutsch was a financier at the Austrian court. He studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts 1872–1875, then, in 1878, moved to Paris where he became strongly associated with Orientalism.
