More about this artwork

George Morland's pastoral painting "The Old Water Mill," created in 1790, masterfully captures the essence of rural life during the era. This evocative piece combines naturalistic detail with a sense of tranquil activity that transports the viewer to a simpler, bygone age.The scene is set around a charming old water mill, nestled amidst lush greenery and towering trees. The thatched roof of the mill, beautifully textured and slightly worn, speaks of years weathering the elements. A stream courses energetically past the mill, the water animatedly spilling over rocks, which enhances the painting’s sense of movement and sound.Adding life to this serene rural tableau are several figures engaging in daily activities. A group of villagers, depicted in period attire, are shown interacting near the mill. Their presence along with domestic animals, including horses and sheep, adds layers of narrative to the painting, suggesting a close-knit community living in harmony with nature. The painted landscape is dominated by an impressive, gnarled tree to the right, its branches sprawling outwards with a life of their own. This tree, perhaps as much a character in the painting as any of the humans or animals, lends a dynamic quality to the composition, its form echoing the untamed beauty of the natural world."The Old Water Mill" is a splendid example of George Morland’s ability to create rich, detailed vistas that are not only visually appealing but also evoke a sense of nostalgia for rural life and natural beauty.

George Morland (26 June 1763 – 29 October 1804) was an English painter. His early work was influenced by Francis Wheatley, but after the 1790s he came into his own style. His best compositions focus on rustic scenes: farms and hunting; smugglers and gypsies; and rich, textured landscapes informed by Dutch Golden Age painting.
