More about this artwork

Marie Egner’s painting, "Altweibersommer," which translates to "Indian Summer," mesmerizes with its intricate depiction of a bountiful autumnal arrangement. Egner masterfully captures the essence of this serene and mellow period through her detailed expression of flora and foliage transcending the warm tones of the end of the season. In this painting, Egner arranges an overflowing bouquet of autumnal elements in a dark, classical vase that firmly stands at the center. The arrangement itself is a rich tapestry of colors and textures, featuring leaves in shades of gold, rust, and fading green, clustered berries, and delicate white flowers that inject a burst of life amidst the decay. The foliage spills gracefully over the sides of the vase, suggesting both abundance and the gentle wilting of nature as it prepares for the winter ahead.Adjacent to the vase, a weathered book lies open, perhaps abandoned by its reader, adding a layer of human presence and narrative to the scene. This inclusion hints at the passage of time and the contemplative mood often associated with autumn. The backdrop and the surfaces in the composition bear muted tones and textures, which echo the overall theme of transient beauty."Altweibersommer" is not only a testament to Marie Egner’s skill as a painter of nature but also a poignant reminder of the fleeting moments of beauty that autumn offers before the onset of winter.

Marie Egner was an Austrian painter.

In 1882, she went to Vienna to live with her mother, but spent her summers at the art colony in Plankenberg Castle, near Neulengbach, where she took lessons with Emil Jakob Schindler until 1887. A study trip to England followed from 1887 to 1889. Shortly after, her first exhibition was held at the Vienna Künstlerhaus. She also exhibited in Germany and England.
