More about this artwork

"White Horse," a compelling realist painting by the renowned 19th-century French artist Rosa Bonheur, captures the dignified essence of a solitary white horse standing in a rustic stable. Bonheur, celebrated for her detailed and vibrant depictions of animals, imbues this painting with a sense of peacefulness and strength. The horse, with its finely rendered dappled gray coat, appears calm yet attentive, facing slightly towards the viewer with an expression that conveys both nobility and gentleness. The artist’s skill in texturing is exemplified in the horse's shimmering coat and the soft gleam of light reflecting off its body, which contrasts with the darker, subdued background of the stable. The rough texture of the straw-covered stable floor alongside the dimly lit interior adds a rustic quality to the scene, creating a naturalistic and serene atmosphere. Rosa Bonheur's meticulous attention to anatomical accuracy and her ability to capture the mood and personality of her subject make "White Horse" not just a portrait of an animal, but a profound statement of her respect and admiration for the natural world.

Rosa Bonheur, born Marie-Rosalie Bonheur, was a French artist, mostly a painter of animals (animalière) but also a sculptor, in a realist style. Her paintings include Ploughing in the Nivernais, first exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1848, and now at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, and The Horse Fair (in French: Le marché aux chevaux), which was exhibited at the Salon of 1853 (finished in 1855) and is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York City. Bonheur was widely considered to be the most famous female painter of the nineteenth century.
