More about this artwork

David Cox’s evocative watercolor, "Penmaenmawr," painted in 1855, captures the awe-inspiring presence and subtle beauty of the rural Welsh landscape. In this painting, Cox masterfully portrays the rugged majesty of the Penmaenmawr mountain, located in North Wales, known for its ancient history and dramatic vistas overlooking the Irish Sea.The painting is characterized by its dynamic composition and vibrant interplay of light and shadow. Cox uses a varied palette to emphasize the rich textures of the mountain terrain. Sunlight and shadow dance across the craggy hill faces, showcasing different shades of browns, greens, and grays, while a glimpse of the blue sea at the horizon adds a refreshing touch to the predominantly earthen tones.Above, the vast sky occupies a significant portion of the canvas, with fluffy, billowing clouds rolling across it, suggesting the changing weather typical of the region. Cox’s use of sweeping brushstrokes in the sky contrasts with the detailed, almost tactile rendering of the rocky landscape, creating a dynamic tension between the elements of air and earth. This painting not only reflects Cox’s technical skill in handling watercolor but also his profound ability to convey the emotional and atmospheric qualities of a landscape.

David Cox (29 April 1783 – 7 June 1859) was an English landscape painter, one of the most important members of the Birmingham School of landscape artists and an early precursor of Impressionism.

He is considered one of the greatest English landscape painters, and a major figure of the Golden age of English watercolour.

Although most popularly known for his works in watercolour, he also painted over 300 works in oil towards the end of his career, now considered "one of the greatest, but least recognised, achievements of any British painter."

His son, known as David Cox the Younger (1809–1885), was also a successful artist.
