More about this artwork

Welcome to the contemplative world of John Constable’s “Sky Study with Rainbow,” an artwork created in 1827 that offers a unique perspective into the artist's profound connection with the natural world. Captured in watercolor, this study paints an ephemeral moment in the vastness of the sky.At the heart of the painting lies a luminous and delicately rendered rainbow that arches gracefully against a tumultuous grey sky. The rainbow, with its vivid streaks of yellow and orange set against the darker hues, becomes a symbol of hope and tranquility amidst a storm. This simple yet powerful element draws the viewer's eye, providing a focal point and a burst of color in the otherwise muted tones of the scene.Constable’s masterful use of watercolor allows for a soft blending of the rainbow into the brooding clouds, suggesting the fleeting nature of beauty and the transient moments of light in our lives. This piece encapsulates Constable’s keen observation of atmospheric conditions and his ability to translate these observations into poignant artworks. With “Sky Study with Rainbow,” Constable captures not just an atmospheric phenomenon, but also conveys a deep emotional resonance, reflecting his love and reverence for the sky as a ceaseless source of inspiration.

John Constable RA was an English landscape painter in the Romantic tradition. Born in Suffolk, he is known principally for revolutionising the genre of landscape painting with his pictures of Dedham Vale, the area surrounding his home – now known as "Constable Country" – which he invested with an intensity of affection. "I should paint my own places best", he wrote to his friend John Fisher in 1821, "painting is but another word for feeling".
