More about this artwork

George Inness, one of the most celebrated figures in American landscape painting, masterfully captures the serene and contemplative essence of nature in his painting "Looking over the River," created in 1886. This artwork exemplifies Inness's signature style that harmoniously blends realism with atmospheric impressionism, inviting viewers into a deeply personal experience of the landscape. In the painting, a lone figure stands at the edge of a lush meadow, gazing out towards a distant river that gently meanders through an expansive flat landscape. The foreground is richly adorned with vibrant greens and earthy tones that suggest the untamed growth of early summer. A single slender tree bisects the canvas, its sparse foliage not yet in full bloom, hinting at the transitional state of the season. The sky, a subtle tapestry of grays and soft blues laced with hints of warmer tones, suggests the time of day is either dawn or dusk, a moment when light and shadows merge to create a quiet, ephemeral atmosphere. This transitional light enhances the mood of introspection and tranquility.Inness's brushwork, with its fluid, expressive strokes, beautifully conveys the texture of foliage and grass, as well as the atmospheric effects of the sky. This technique not only emphasizes the painterly qualities of the work but also evokes a sense of immediacy and the impermanence of the moment captured."Looking over the River" stands as a testament to George Inness’s ability to evoke emotion through landscape, making the viewer pause and reflect upon the quiet beauty of nature and the profound peace it can offer.

George Inness (May 1, 1825 – August 3, 1894) was a prominent American landscape painter.

Now recognized as one of the most influential American artists of the nineteenth century, Inness was influenced by the Hudson River School at the start of his career. He also studied the Old Masters, and artists of the Barbizon school during later trips to Europe. There he was introduced to the theology of Emanuel Swedenborg, which was significant for him; he expressed that spiritualism in the works of his maturity (1879–1894).
