More about this artwork

John Constable's "An Autumnal Landscape at East Bergholt" provides a quintessential glimpse into the serene and rustic English countryside, imbued with the rich, warm hues of autumn. Painted between 1805 and 1808, this artwork captures the essence of East Bergholt, the village in Suffolk where Constable was born and which deeply influenced his oeuvre. At the heart of this landscape is a majestic group of trees, their foliage bursting in vibrant tones of orange and red, suggesting the arrival of autumn. The trees dominate the composition, set against a soft, muted sky that hints at the changing season. Beneath these towering trees, a wooden fence gently guides the viewer's eye across the field, enhancing the depth and perspective of the scene. The tranquility of the painting is palpable. There is no human presence; instead, the landscape itself is the subject, inviting viewers to linger over the natural beauty and the transient quality of seasonal change. Constable's brushwork is loose and expressive, contributing to a sense of immediacy and spontaneity, as if capturing a fleeting moment in nature."An Autumnal Landscape at East Bergholt" exemplifies Constable's skill in portraying the atmospheric conditions of the English countryside and his deep, personal connection to the landscapes that shaped his childhood and artistic vision.

John Constable RA was an English landscape painter in the Romantic tradition. Born in Suffolk, he is known principally for revolutionising the genre of landscape painting with his pictures of Dedham Vale, the area surrounding his home – now known as "Constable Country" – which he invested with an intensity of affection. "I should paint my own places best", he wrote to his friend John Fisher in 1821, "painting is but another word for feeling".
