More about this artwork

On our tour of exquisite landscapes captured in paint, one cannot overlook Joseph Farington’s serene depiction in "Rydalmere." This enchanting painting transports the viewer into a picturesque scene nestled within a tranquil valley that could stir any nature lover's spirit. The foreground introduces rugged, weather-beaten cliffs over which a shepherd guides his flock of sheep, providing a pastoral charm typical of Farington's works. As our gaze moves toward the heart of the canvas, a smooth expanse of a lake takes center stage—Rydalmere itself—reflecting the dusky hues of a soft sky above, interspersed with drifting clouds.Enclosing this peaceful water mirror are rolling hills and distant mountains, which add a sense of depth and solitude. Farington’s subtle interplay of light and shadow across this diverse terrain captures the atmospheric mood and broadens the reach of the visual expanse.A true testament to Farington’s mastery in capturing the essence of British landscapes, this painting not only reflects the physical attributes of Rydalmere but also evokes a quietude that resonates with anyone who has ever found solace in nature's embrace.

Joseph Farington RA was an 18th-century English landscape painter and diarist.

Born in Leigh, Lancashire, Farington was the second of seven sons of William Farington and Esther Gilbody. His father was the rector of Warrington and vicar of Leigh. Three of his brothers—William, Henry, and Richard—were "employed in the naval service of the East India Company". Edward died of yellow fever when he was 32. Robert attended Brasenose College and became vicar of St George in the East, London (whose advowson was held by Brasenose). George Farington became a painter, like Joseph himself.
