More about this artwork

Théophile Alexandre Steinlen, renowned for his vivid illustrations and poignant artistic narratives, presents a compelling scene in his 1891 work, “L’aventure Du Vieux Doyen” (The Adventure of the Old Dean). In this intricate drawing, the artist captures a moment rich with social interaction and nuanced expressions. The painting illustrates an elderly gentleman, presumably the ‘Old Dean’, engaged in what appears to be a moment of introduction or conversation with a group of young women. This central figure, distinguished by his refined attire and poised demeanor, stands facing the women, who are adorned in elegant dresses that reflect styles from the late 19th century. Their faces are turned towards him, suggesting a scene of respectful acknowledgement or perhaps a mild curiosity about his presence.Adding depth to the scene, one woman in a gray dress, who might be acting as a chaperone or hostess, is seen shaking hands with the dean, marking a gesture of formal greeting. The rest of the group expresses varying degrees of engagement, from keen interest to slightly distracted interactions amongst themselves.Steinlen’s use of soft yet defined lines and subtle color tones enhances the lively yet gentle nature of the gathering. The background, while sparse, features a classical statue, hinting at a setting of cultural or educational significance, which complements the intellectual aura of the dean.“L’aventure Du Vieux Doyen” not only showcases Steinlen’s skill in portraiture and group dynamics but also encapsulates a specific social moment, reflecting the cultural and social etiquettes of the time. This painting invites viewers to delve into a narrative, piecing together the story and relationships that might exist between these characters.

Théophile Alexandre Steinlen, was a Swiss-born French Art Nouveau painter and printmaker.

Born in Lausanne, Steinlen studied at the University of Lausanne before taking a job as a designer trainee at a textile mill in Mulhouse in eastern France. In his early twenties he was still developing his skills as a painter when he and his wife Emilie were encouraged by the painter François Bocion to move to the artistic community in the Montmartre Quarter of Paris. Once there, Steinlen was befriended by the painter Adolphe Willette who introduced him to the artistic crowd at Le Chat Noir that led to his commissions to do poster art for the cabaret owner/entertainer, Aristide Bruant and other commercial enterprises.
