More about this artwork

"Annerl" is a captivating artwork by the renowned Symbolist painter Gustav Klimt, created in 1885. This delicate portrait displays Klimt’s early mastery in rendering human figures, a skill that would eventually evolve into his iconic gilded Art Nouveau style. In this drawing, Klimt captures the innocent and contemplative visage of a young girl named Annerl. The piece is skillfully executed with a soft yet precise use of charcoal and white highlights on toned paper, which emphasize the gentle and subtle features of her face. The gaze of the girl is particularly striking; she looks slightly upward and to the left with an expression that seems to reflect introspection or quiet curiosity. The fine details of her hair, pinned up and tousled, add a naturalistic touch to the portrayal, creating a contrast with the smoothness of her young skin.Klimt's signature, placed discreetly at the bottom-right corner, adds a personal touch to the composition, reminding viewers of the artist’s presence even in this moment of subdued intimacy. This artwork not only exemplifies Klimt's early focus on portraiture but also hints at his later interest in the depth of human expression, which would become more prominent in his subsequent works.

Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) was one of the greatest Austrian symbolist painters of the Art Nouveau era. Renowned as one of the most prominent founding members, and as a president of the Vienna Art Nouveau movement (Vienna Secession). His works were mainly paintings, murals, and sketches. Marked by his numerous erotic drawings, Klimt's primary subject were female figures, and at one point his work was even criticized as pornographic. Klimt found financial success in his "Golden Phase" with decorative techniques and the prominent use of gold leaf in his paintings.
