More about this artwork

"Monte Soratte near Rome," painted by the renowned British artist Edward Lear, offers a serene and picturesque view of the Italian landscape that surrounding the famous mountain located just outside of Rome. In this exquisite painting, Lear captures the majestic beauty of Monte Soratte, which rises grandly in the distant center, its peak a beacon against the soft sky. With its pale blue and delicate gray tones, the mountain contrasts subtly with the lush greenery that dominates the foreground.Lear’s attention to detail and love for nature is evident in the meticulous depiction of the flora. To the left, a cluster of tall, slender trees and dense bushes frame the composition, leading the viewer's eye toward the vast expanse. On the right, another group of trees gently envelops a small figure, possibly a local contemplating the vast landscape. This human element adds a sense of scale and life, reminding us of the everlasting interaction between man and nature. The foreground of the painting is particularly dramatic, featuring rugged cliffs that provide a stark contrast to the soft, rolling hills that recede into the distance. This juxtaposition is masterfully rendered with a rich palette of earthy browns and greens, highlighting the diverse textures of the natural world.Edward Lear, primarily known for his nonsensical poetry and prose, was also a gifted landscape painter, and this work is a testament to his artistic versatility. "Monte Soratte near Rome" invites viewers to lose themselves in its calm and timeless beauty, and to appreciate the peaceful solitude that nature can offer.

Edward Lear (12 May 1812 – 29 January 1888) was an English artist, illustrator, musician, author and poet, who is known mostly for his literary nonsense in poetry and prose and especially his limericks, a form he popularised.

His principal areas of work as an artist were threefold: as a draughtsman employed to make illustrations of birds and animals; making coloured drawings during his journeys, which he reworked later, sometimes as plates for his travel books; and as a (minor) illustrator of Alfred, Lord Tennyson's poems.

As an author, he is known principally for his popular nonsense collections of poems, songs, short stories, botanical drawings, recipes and alphabets. He also composed and published twelve musical settings of Tennyson's poetry.
