More about this artwork

Camille Pissarro's painting titled "La Maison Ronde Sous La Neige, Pontoise" or "Chemin de L’Hermitage, Pontoise, Sous La Neige" (circa 1875) captures a serene, snow-covered landscape in Pontoise, a town that frequently inspired the artist. This picturesque scene, painted in Pissarro’s distinctive Impressionist style, vividly portrays a winter day with a soft, muted palette that conveys the chill in the air.The painting focuses on a narrow pathway between rustic buildings, partially shrouded by snow. The soft whites and grays of the snow contrast beautifully with the earthy tones of the houses and the bare, dark branches of the trees, creating a rich textural interplay that invites the viewer to feel the quiet of the snowy day. The presence of two figures, one walking away and one approaching, adds a sense of life and movement amidst the stillness, suggesting daily activities continue despite the cold weather.Characteristically of Pissarro, the brushwork is loose and expressive, allowing the forms and colors to blend subtly. This technique captures both the transient light of the winter sky and the fleeting human presence within the landscape, emphasizing the harmony between the environment and its inhabitants. The work is not just a visual exploration but also a reflection on the resilience of life in the face of nature's calm yet imposing wintry facade.

Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing. — Camille Pissarro

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was born on St.Thomas (now the US Virgin Islands) to a Portuguese father and a Dominican mother. He went to Paris to study art at Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He was an early pioneer of pointillism and neo-impressionism and later became a mentor of many famous impressionist painters including Cezanne, Manet, Renoir, and Gauguin. His paintings depicted rural and urban French landscapes and lifestyle. Many of his works politically captured images of peasants and laborers. Today, he is considered the father of impressionism.
