More about this artwork

Eugène Boudin's captivating work "On the Jetty," painted circa 1869-1870, encapsulates vivid impressions of maritime life and leisurely moments by the sea. Renowned for his marine landscapes, Boudin's brush strokes gently convey the motion and energy of a breezy day at the jetty. The scene is alive with a diverse assembly of people engaging with the environment and each other, which showcases the artist's talent for capturing human interactions in outdoor settings. In the foreground, groups of elegantly dressed figures stand and converse, evoking the social outings of the period. The attire of the figures suggests varying degrees of formality and offers a glimpse into the fashion of that era. A couple of dogs add a touch of everyday life, contributing to the scene's dynamic nature. In the distance, several boats with tall masts pierce the horizon, their sails gracefully billowing in the wind. The sky, a central element in many of Boudin’s works, is rendered with a careful gradation of colors, transitioning from the soft grays of the stormy clouds to the clearer blues of a clearing sky. This provides a dramatic backdrop for the fluttering flags above the jetty, hinting at the artist's fascination with atmospheric conditions.Titled "On the Jetty," Boudin's painting offers more than a simple depiction of a location; it invites viewers to experience the fresh air, the sound of water, and the vibrant community life of a seaside gathering in the late 19th century.

Eugène Louis Boudin (12 July 1824 – 8 August 1898) was one of the first French landscape painters to paint outdoors. Boudin was a marine painter, and expert in the rendering of all that goes upon the sea and along its shores. His pastels, summary and economic, garnered the splendid eulogy of Baudelaire; and Corot called him the "King of the skies".
