More about this artwork

The painting "Portrait of the Artist’s Mother" by Carl Larsson in 1898 is a striking representation of his mother, Anna Larsson. This portrait features her standing upright with a dignified expression, capturing both her strength and the graceful aging of a beloved maternal figure. She is dressed in a long, flowing grey shawl with blue highlights and a dark dress visible underneath. Her attire is complemented by a dark hat adorned with ribbons, which adds a touch of elegance to her overall appearance. Her face, detailed with the finesse typical of Larsson's work, shows the lines of age and experience, reflecting a life fully lived. The expression in her eyes imbues the painting with a serene yet poignant ambiance, as they gaze thoughtfully out of the canvas. The use of light and shadow in the painting highlights her facial features and the textures of her clothing, enhancing the emotional depth of the portrait. This painting not only serves as a personal homage but also exemplifies the skill of Larsson in capturing human emotions and the subtleties of character through his art. It’s a moving tribute from a son to his mother, immortalizing her image and the warmth of his connection to her.
