More about this artwork

"Truth Coming Out of Her Well to Shame Mankind" is a striking 1896 painting by the French artist Jean-Léon Gérôme. This artwork depicts a highly allegorical and thought-provoking scene where Truth, personified as a nude woman, emerges from a well. Situated in a secluded, overgrown courtyard, the well's mossy and ivy-clad stones enhance the sense of age and neglect, implying the forgotten or often ignored nature of truth.Truth itself is shown stepping forward, her expression a mixture of resolve and dismay, a powerful representation of her dismay towards humanity’s disregard for truth. In one hand, she grasps a whip, symbolizing perhaps her readiness to chastise deceit and encourage a return to integrity. The setting's rustic and somewhat crumbling architecture, paired with lush greenery subtly overtaking the scene, creates a compelling contrast between nature and the built environment, highlighting the enduring and unyielding quality of truth despite human neglect or avoidance.

Jean-Léon Gérôme was a French painter and sculptor in the style now known as academicism. His paintings were so widely reproduced that he was "arguably the world's most famous living artist by 1880." The range of his oeuvre included historical painting, Greek mythology, Orientalism, portraits, and other subjects, bringing the academic painting tradition to an artistic climax. He is considered one of the most important painters from this academic period. He was also a teacher with a long list of students.
