More about this artwork

Jean-Léon Gérôme, a pivotal figure of 19th-century French painting renowned for his Orientalist works, masterfully captures a significant historical encounter in "Cléopâtre et César." In this exquisite painting, Gérôme depicts the strategic yet intimate meeting between Cleopatra VII, the last active ruler of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt, and Julius Caesar, the Roman general and dictator. The setting is rich with the opulence of an Egyptian palace, filled with hieroglyphics and ancient motifs that adorn the walls and columns, evoking the splendor of a civilization long past. Cleopatra stands with regal poise, clothed in fine translucent fabrics and traditional jewelry, indicating her royal status. Her expression, directed towards Caesar, is one of calm determination, illustrating her known intelligence and political savvy.Caesar, seated and slightly lower than Cleopatra, appears contemplative and perhaps taken aback by the queen's presence and proposal. His posture and attire, a simple tunic with a red cloak, reflect a Roman simplicity contrasting with the elaborate Egyptian setting.Gérôme's skilled use of lighting highlights Cleopatra as the focal point of the composition, drawing viewers' attention to her as the central figure in both the artwork and the historical narrative. This painting not only showcases Gérôme’s attention to historical detail and his skill in creating dramatic, engaging scenes but also captures a pivotal moment when two great cultures, Roman and Egyptian, intertwined through these legendary figures.

Jean-Léon Gérôme was a French painter and sculptor in the style now known as academicism. His paintings were so widely reproduced that he was "arguably the world's most famous living artist by 1880." The range of his oeuvre included historical painting, Greek mythology, Orientalism, portraits, and other subjects, bringing the academic painting tradition to an artistic climax. He is considered one of the most important painters from this academic period. He was also a teacher with a long list of students.
