More about this artwork

"Portrait of a Young Venetian Woman" is a striking artwork from the renowned German artist Albrecht Dürer, painted during his stay in Venice in 1506. This painting is an exquisite example of Dürer's mastery in portraiture, characterized by its detailed realism and the subtle complexities of human expression. The portrait features a young woman, viewed in profile against a faded blue background. Her demeanor is serene and introspective, captured with a gentle realism that was revolutionary for the time. Dürer's focus on the texture and nuances of the young woman's face and attire reflects his deep study of the Renaissance techniques that were flourishing in Italy. The subject's clothing is ornate, indicative of her social status. She wears a richly embroidered dress with a dark, possibly velvet band adorned with gold highlights, emphasizing the luxurious taste of Venetian society. Around her neck, a delicate chain with intricate designs complements her elegantly styled hair. This portrait not only showcases Dürer's technical skill but also his ability to infuse his works with a sense of genuine humanity and personality.

Christian paintings, woodcuts and landscapes by the German Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). Dürer's pieces on Christian themes and allegory are considered to be the finest examples of the Northern Renaissance. One of Dürer's most famous works on Christ is his "Crucifixion" woodcut (1503). The piece demonstrates Dürer's mastery of the medium and deep understanding of Christian symbolism. The work depicts the crucifixion of Christ in a powerful and realistic manner, with an emphasis on the suffering and sacrifice of Christ. Dürer began his career as an apprentice in Nuremberg to the master craftsman Michael Wolgemut. He later became the founding member of the city's painters' guild and was an active member of humanist circles prominent in Nuremberg at the time.
