More about this artwork

In this remarkable representation of Paris in 1900, Camille Pissarro captures a moody, rain-swept scene near the iconic Louvre Museum. With his deft Impressionist touch, Pissarro conveys not only the physical landscape but also the brisk atmosphere of this historic cityscape during a gentle downpour."The Louvre, Afternoon Rainy Weather" exhibits a panoramic view of the Seine River bustling with boats, which includes river barges and steamers, as it meanders alongside the ornate facades of riverside buildings. Remarkably, the artist plays with hues and shimmering reflections on the wet surfaces to evoke the damp mood of a rainy Parisian day.To the left, leaf-bare trees delicately frame the scene, their fine branches etched against the overcast sky, suggesting the coldness of the season. The brushwork on the water is vigorous and dynamic, reflecting the artist’s unmistakable style. On the riverbank, figures shield themselves with umbrellas or hasten along their way, adding a palpable sense of daily life and activity. This painting not only captures a specific moment in time but also expresses the continual, lively pulse of Paris, even under a veil of rain.

Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing. — Camille Pissarro

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was born on St.Thomas (now the US Virgin Islands) to a Portuguese father and a Dominican mother. He went to Paris to study art at Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He was an early pioneer of pointillism and neo-impressionism and later became a mentor of many famous impressionist painters including Cezanne, Manet, Renoir, and Gauguin. His paintings depicted rural and urban French landscapes and lifestyle. Many of his works politically captured images of peasants and laborers. Today, he is considered the father of impressionism.
