More about this artwork

Discover the tranquil beauty of Oscar-Claude Monet's "Nymphéas Avec Reflets De Hautes Herbes" (1914-17), a stunning example of Monet's commitment to capturing the ephemeral nature of light and water. This remarkable piece, part of Monet’s celebrated Water Lilies series, encapsulates the essence of his beloved pond in Giverny, which he transformed into an artistic retreat. In this serene composition, we witness Monet’s fascination with water surfaces and the reflections cast by the surrounding flora. The foreground is graced with delicate, flowering water lilies floating on the pond, depicted in soft shades of pink, green, and white. These colors blend seamlessly into the water, mirroring the sky's varying hues. Dominating the upper part of the canvas are the graceful, overhanging greenery of tall grasses, their reflections creating a fluid, almost dreamlike movement that stretches across the calm water.Monet's brushstrokes are loose and expressive, conveying not just the visual beauty of the scene, but also the atmosphere and light of an ever-changing, natural landscape. This painting invites the viewer to pause and immerse themselves in a moment of peaceful reflection, much like Monet did at his garden sanctuary.

Oscar-Claude Monet was a founder of French Impressionist painting, and the most consistent and prolific practitioner of the movement's philosophy of expressing one's perceptions before nature. Monet's ambition of documenting the French countryside led him to adopt a method of painting the same scene many times in order to capture the changing of light and the passing of the seasons. From 1883 Monet lived in Giverny, where he purchased a house and property, and began a vast landscaping project which included lily ponds that would become the subjects of his best-known works. In 1899 he began painting the water lilies, first in vertical views with a Japanese bridge as a central feature, and later in the series of large-scale paintings that was to occupy him continuously for the next 20 years of his life.
