More about this artwork

Julius Sergius Klever's "Winterlandschaft bei untergehender Sonne" (Winter Landscape at Sunset) is a captivating exploration of the serene and melancholic beauty of winter. Through the artist's masterful brushwork, vibrant textures, and moody palette, viewers are transported into a wintery forest at the close of day.The painting details a dense thicket of trees, their branches bare and twisted, covered in the last remnants of snow. These stark trees frame the canvas, guiding the viewer's eyes towards the heart of the scene. There, a subtle yet fiery sunset bleeds through the forest, casting a warm glow that contrasts starkly with the surrounding chill. The sky, not entirely visible, hints at the setting sun with its warm hues piercing through the cool tones of the twilight-tinted atmosphere.Subtle touches, such as hints of greens and browns on the forest floor and delicate traces of snow clinging to the rough bark, add layers of texture that enrich the visual experience. Klever's technique creates a nearly palpable sense of the moist, cold air and the quiet solitude of the forest during winter."Winterlandschaft bei untergehender Sonne" is more than a simple landscape; it is a poetic reflection on nature's quiet transition from day into night, highlighted by the stillness of winter's embrace.

Julius Sergius von Klever was a Baltic German landscape painter.

His father was a chemist who taught pharmacology at the Veterinary Institute. He displayed artistic talent at an early age and took lessons from Konstantin von Kügelgen. After completing his primary education, was enrolled at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts where, at his father's insistence, he studied architecture. After a short time, however, he began to take landscape painting classes; first with Sokrat Vorobiev, then Mikhail Clodt.
