More about this artwork

Explore the mystical and vivid imagination of Paul Gauguin through "The Universe is Created," a captivating woodcut print that delves into the themes of creation and mythology. This artwork stands out with its dynamic contrast and dramatic visual narrative, where Gauguin fuses elements of symbolism with his interpretation of primitive forms and spirituality. In this print, Gauguin portrays a world emerging from chaos. The earthy tones and fluid lines illustrate a cosmic swirl, where figures and shapes seem to both emerge from and dissolve into their surroundings. Dominating the scene is a striking, mask-like figure in the lower right, colored in vivid red and cream, drawing the viewer’s eyes and evoking the primal forces at play in creation myths.Surrounding this central figure, the environment is alive with suggestive forms that could be interpreted as terrestrial features or ethereal beings, suggesting the interconnectedness of earthly and spiritual realms. The sparse use of color highlights Gauguin’s skill in focusing attention and adding depth to the narrative. This piece reflects Gauguin's venture into the depths of symbolic storytelling and his ability to encapsulate complex cosmological ideas in compelling visual forms.

Eugène Henri Paul Gauguin was a French Post-Impressionist artist. Unappreciated until after his death, Gauguin is now recognized for his experimental use of color and Synthetist style that were distinct from Impressionism. Toward the end of his life, he spent ten years in French Polynesia. The paintings from this time depict people or landscapes from that region.
