More about this artwork

Artist: Paul GauguinPaul Gauguin's painting, "Houses at Vaugirard," masterfully captures a serene and bucolic scene from the quiet locale of Vaugirard, then a suburban area on the outskirts of Paris. This artwork, painted in 1880, displays Gauguin’s exceptional ability to blend color, light, and structure, elements that hint at the transformational journey his style would undergo in subsequent years. In "Houses at Vaugirard," Gauguin portrays a modest, rural landscape dotted with simple houses. The scene is viewed from an elevated vantage point, looking down on the roofs and gardens of the village. The texture of the thatched and tiled roofs is rendered in meticulous detail, with varying shades of browns and greys. The warm yellow and ochre hues of the walls provide a contrast that breathes life into the scene, suggesting the presence of sunlight despite the overcast sky.The foreground of the painting is dominated by lush greenery and a patch of land that appears untamed and wild, adding a sense of natural beauty and tranquility. The use of light and shadow subtly emphasizes the rustic charm of the village, inviting viewers to ponder the daily lives of its inhabitants.Through this painting, Gauguin not only documents a place but also conveys a mood of peaceful solitude and timeless existence, far from the bustling city life. "Houses at Vaugirard" is a testament to Gauguin’s early work and his keen observation of his surroundings, making it a cherished piece for both art enthusiasts and collectors.

Eugène Henri Paul Gauguin was a French Post-Impressionist artist. Unappreciated until after his death, Gauguin is now recognized for his experimental use of color and Synthetist style that were distinct from Impressionism. Toward the end of his life, he spent ten years in French Polynesia. The paintings from this time depict people or landscapes from that region.
