More about this artwork

Joseph Mallord William Turner's enchanting painting, "Modern Rome – Campo Vaccino," created in 1839, invites viewers into a breathtaking panorama of Rome's ancient ruins bathed in a soft, ethereal light. This masterful artwork captures the former Roman Forum, once the bustling heart of the ancient city and a cornerstone of its public life, now serene and pastoral under a vast, luminous sky.The delicate interplay of light and color creates a dreamy, almost atmospheric quality that is quintessentially Turner. The sun, depicted in golden hues, casts a warm glow over the ruins, highlighting the grandeur of the city's classical architecture. In the foreground, everyday life unfolds with figures engaging in leisurely activities amid the remnants of colossal columns and arches. This juxtaposition of the ancient and the contemporary humanizes the scene, providing a poignant reminder of the passage of time and the enduring presence of history in modern life.As one gazes at Turner's "Modern Rome – Campo Vaccino," it's possible to feel a sense of both nostalgia and awe - nostalgia for the grandeur of what once was, and awe at the beauty of the decay that time has wrought.

He left behind more than 550 oil paintings, 2,000 watercolours, and 30,000 works on paper. He was championed by the leading English art critic John Ruskin from 1840, and is today regarded as having elevated landscape painting to an eminence rivalling history painting.
