More about this artwork

The artwork titled "October" by Julie de Graag offers a captivating glimpse into the essence of autumn through the artist's unique vision. Created in 1917, this piece showcases De Graag's skill in woodcut printing, a technique that emphasizes both simplicity and depth in its execution. The image portrays two richly textured mushroom-like plants, intricately detailed and set against a stark, dark background that highlights their forms. These plants, resembling a kind of organic canopy, merge fluidly, their caps intricately woven like delicate fabric folds. Their stalks rise with a quiet strength, anchoring the gentle turbulence of the caps.Reddish-brown tones on creamy base suggest the warmth of October’s palette, capturing the transformation from the green-filled vigour of summer to the mellow coolness that precedes winter. Each curve and groove in the plants speak of October’s characteristic blend of decay and richness, symbolizing life’s perpetual cycle of growth and retreat."October" by Julie de Graag is not just a visual representation but also an emotional echo of the season, inviting viewers to reflect on the impermanent yet recurring beauty of nature’s cycles.
