More about this artwork

Maurice Pillard Verneuil's "Aigle et chêne, aras et maïs, bordures. Poissons et oiseaux, frise" (1897) is a resplendent example of Art Nouveau, showcasing the artist’s profound fascination with the natural world through a splendid collection of motifs and a vibrant palette. This work is divided into a triptych of panels, each detailing different elements of nature enriched with stylized decorative forms. The top left panel features an eagle, regally posed amidst oak leaves, illustrating the majestic and powerful essence of the bird, harmoniously intertwined with the strength and endurance symbolized by the oak. The eagle's detailed feathers and intense gaze are highlighted against a rich, earthy background, making the image both commanding and alluring.Adjacent to this, the top right panel displays two parrots, vivid in blue, perched alongside golden ears of corn. The parrots' vibrant plumage and the lush, leafy elements encapsulate the exotic and lush aspects of nature. This contrast of the deep blues against the golden yellows creates a visually striking and dynamic composition.Below, a frieze depicts an aquatic scene with fish swimming dynamically across a flowing, wavy backdrop, punctuated by fruit-laden trees on the banks, possibly orange trees, and birds in flight above. This suggests a harmonious ecosystem where water and earth coexist peacefully. Each panel, while illustrating different facets of the natural world, is unified through Verneuil's exquisite use of color and form, making the artwork not just a visual delight but also a symbol of the interconnectedness of nature.
