More about this artwork

David Roberts' captivating painting "Alexandria" (1846-1849) offers a stunning glimpse into the maritime life of the 19th-century Egyptian port city. This exquisite piece of art illustrates a serene morning, where the soft light of sunrise gently illuminates the bustling harbor. In the foreground of the painting, small boats manned by local sailors glide smoothly over the shimmering waters. These traditional vessels, laden with goods, contrast with the grandeur of the tall ships anchored in the background. The ships, characterized by their impressive masts and the intricate rigging, tower over the harbor, showcasing Alexandria as a pivotal maritime hub during this period. The distant shoreline is faintly sketched, giving a sense of the sprawling urban landscape behind the busy docks. The subtle hues and the atmospheric perspective employed by Roberts evoke a sense of calm and majesty, reflecting the strategic and commercial significance of Alexandria during a time when maritime trade was a lifeline connecting different parts of the world.Roberts' meticulous attention to detail not only captures the physical beauty of the harbor but also hints at the vibrant cultural exchanges occurring in Alexandria, a city famed for its diverse population and historic significance. Through this painting, viewers are transported to a critical moment in history, where every ship and every sail tells a story of journeys, trade, and the mixing of cultures at this crossroads of the world.

David Roberts (24 October 1796 – 25 November 1864) was a Scottish painter. He is especially known for The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, and Nubia, a prolific series of detailed lithograph prints of Egypt and the Near East that he produced from sketches he made during long tours of the region (1838–1840). These and his large oil paintings of similar subjects made him a prominent Orientalist painter. He was elected as a Royal Academician in 1841.
