More about this artwork

Nov. 14th, 1838** (1846-1849) by David RobertsDavid Roberts' lithograph titled "Wady Maharraka, Nubia. Nov. 14th, 1838" captures a serene yet haunting depiction of the remnants of ancient civilization nestled within the Nubian landscape. Created during Roberts’ extensive travels through Egypt and the Holy Land in the mid-19th century, this artwork offers a rare glimpse into the past, immortalizing the majestic beauty of eroded structures that have withstood the test of time. The painting portrays the façade of what appears to be a temple, characterized by its classical columns and the intricate architecture typical of ancient Egyptian construction. These stoic columns support a structure that, despite partial collapse and evident decay, still stands proudly against the backdrop of a vast, unyielding desert. To the right, a small cluster of palm trees offers a contrasting sense of life and lushness amidst the predominance of arid terrain and crumbling stone.Roberts' mastery in rendering architectural precision and atmospheric perspective is evident. The soft hues and gentle shading not only suggest the harsh sunlight typical of the region but also evoke a sense of melancholic beauty. The sky above, vast and seemingly endless, creates an overwhelming sense of solitude that surrounds this historic site."Wady Maharraka, Nubia" is not only a detailed architectural study but also a poignant reminder of the relentless passage of time, exploring themes of endurance, memory, and the transient nature of human endeavors.

David Roberts (24 October 1796 – 25 November 1864) was a Scottish painter. He is especially known for The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, and Nubia, a prolific series of detailed lithograph prints of Egypt and the Near East that he produced from sketches he made during long tours of the region (1838–1840). These and his large oil paintings of similar subjects made him a prominent Orientalist painter. He was elected as a Royal Academician in 1841.
