More about this artwork

David Roberts' exquisite watercolor "Bulak, Cairo" transports us to the bustling heart of 19th-century Cairo, offering a vivid glimpse into Egypt's rich cultural heritage. This remarkable piece, created between 1846 and 1849, showcases Roberts' talent for capturing architectural detail and the vibrant atmosphere of the places he visited. At the center of the composition, the eye is drawn to the magnificently detailed minaret, which rises majestically against a soft, hazy sky. The intricate patterns and traditional Islamic architecture of the minaret underscore Roberts' attention to detail and his ability to render complex structures with accuracy and artistic flair.Flanking the busy streets are robust buildings, hinting at the urban density of Cairo. The buildings are adorned with wooden lattice work, typical of Egyptian architecture, which not only adds to the aesthetic appeal but also functions to provide privacy and regulate sunlight. The scene is animated with the daily activities of Cairo's inhabitants and visitors. People in traditional attire, along with traders and travelers with their camels, fill the narrow streets, contributing to a lively, dynamic atmosphere. This human element brings the painting to life, reflecting the bustling activity of a thriving city. With "Bulak, Cairo," Roberts not only provides a window into the historical and architectural essence of Cairo but also immortalizes the vibrancy of life in the city during the mid-19th century.

David Roberts (24 October 1796 – 25 November 1864) was a Scottish painter. He is especially known for The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, and Nubia, a prolific series of detailed lithograph prints of Egypt and the Near East that he produced from sketches he made during long tours of the region (1838–1840). These and his large oil paintings of similar subjects made him a prominent Orientalist painter. He was elected as a Royal Academician in 1841.
