More about this artwork

This painting is an intimate and striking portrait of the artist Magnus Enckell, painted by himself in 1915. In this self-portrait, Enckell has depicted himself in profile, looking to the left, which gives the painting a contemplative and somewhat introspective feel. The artist utilizes bold and expressive brushstrokes, particularly noticeable in the textured background of vivid yellows and greens that contrast with the more subdued tones of his face and attire. His facial features are rendered with a mix of realism and impressionistic touches, emphasizing the shadows and depth of his face without overly detailing every aspect. This technique highlights the play of light and brings a dynamic quality to the portrait.Enckell's attire appears formal, with a dark, structured jacket and a crisp, white shirt visible. The clothes, like his face, are painted with thick, confident strokes, which add a sense of solidity and presence to his figure.Overall, this self-portrait not only captures Enckell’s physical appearance but also subtly conveys something of his personality and mood, perhaps reflecting the artistic and cultural climate of that period. The painting’s strong colors, bold technique, and introspective mood are indicative of Enckell's style, which was influential in the Nordic art scene of the early 20th century.
