More about this artwork

Édouard Vuillard's painting titled "Breakfast" from the year 1894 is a captivating work beautifully capturing an intimate everyday moment through the artist's unique lens. This piece belongs to Vuillard’s early period when he was closely aligned with the Nabis, a group of Post-Impressionist avant-garde artists who prioritized the depiction of emotions and moods over realistic representation. In "Breakfast," Vuillard portrays a quiet, reflective moment of a woman seated at a breakfast table. The viewer sees the woman from behind, gazing out of a window framed by heavy wooden shutters. This angle focuses on her solitude and the tranquility of her morning ritual without revealing her full identity. The composition and perspective create an inviting, warm space, allowing the viewer to ponder about the thoughts crossing her mind as she looks out.The artwork utilizes a rich palette of subdued earth tones to convey warmth and intimacy, characteristic of Vuillard's style. The woman is draped in a soft pink dress that gently blends into the surrounding shades of the interior, symbolizing perhaps the comfort and security of her environment. A striking contrast is provided by the bold yellow of the chair and the delicate details of the white breakfast items, which draw your eye subtly to her activities.Vuillard's brushwork is textured and layered, combining thin and thick strokes that add depth and dimension to the painting. This technique helps to underline the private nature of the scene, emphasizing the textural beauty of everyday life and the serene atmosphere of a morning spent in solitude.

Jean-Édouard Vuillard (11 November 1868 – 21 June 1940) was a French painter, decorative artist, and printmaker. From 1891 through 1900, Vuillard was a prominent member of the avant garde artistic group Les Nabis, creating paintings that assembled areas of pure color. His interior scenes, influenced by Japanese prints, explored the spatial effects of flattened planes of color, pattern, and form. As a decorative artist, Vuillard painted theater sets, panels for interior decoration, and designed plates and stained glass. After 1900, when the Nabis broke up, Vuillard adopted a more realistic style, approaching landscapes and interiors with greater detail and vivid colors. In the 1920s and 1930s, he painted portraits of prominent figures in French industry and the arts in their familiar settings.

Vuillard was influenced by Paul Gauguin, among other post-impressionist painters.
