More about this artwork

This poignant painting by Édouard Vuillard, created in 1902, captures a serene and intimate moment between two figures, believed to be Lucy Hessel and Jeanne Strauss. The title "Lucy Hessel Et Jeanne Strauss Aux Étincelles" translates to Lucy Hessel and Jeanne Strauss at Sparks, suggesting a moment of intellectual or emotional spark between the two.Within the composition, Vuillard’s mastery in depicting indoor scenes with a deep connection to the outdoor world shines through. The scene is framed by a doorway that opens to a vibrant and lush landscape, possibly denoting the comfort and safety of home juxtaposed against the vastness and allure of the outside world. The two figures are seated facing each other, suggesting a conversation or a shared silence that is equally telling. Vuillard’s use of soft, yet expressive brushstrokes lends a texture to the scene that is almost palpable. The woman to the left is turned away from the viewer, adding a layer of intrigue and privacy to the interaction. The woman on the right, possibly Jeanne, is seen in profile, dressed elegantly and engaged deeply with her companion. The choice of colors is diverse yet harmonious. The muted tones inside contrast with the greens and blues of the outdoors, highlighting the boundary between the private and the public sphere. Vuillard’s intentional blurring of this line suggests a permeability, where thoughts and emotions can flow as freely as the light that bathes both spaces.

Jean-Édouard Vuillard (11 November 1868 – 21 June 1940) was a French painter, decorative artist, and printmaker. From 1891 through 1900, Vuillard was a prominent member of the avant garde artistic group Les Nabis, creating paintings that assembled areas of pure color. His interior scenes, influenced by Japanese prints, explored the spatial effects of flattened planes of color, pattern, and form. As a decorative artist, Vuillard painted theater sets, panels for interior decoration, and designed plates and stained glass. After 1900, when the Nabis broke up, Vuillard adopted a more realistic style, approaching landscapes and interiors with greater detail and vivid colors. In the 1920s and 1930s, he painted portraits of prominent figures in French industry and the arts in their familiar settings.

Vuillard was influenced by Paul Gauguin, among other post-impressionist painters.
