More about this artwork

** Experience the intimate and evocative portrait of Suzanne Desprès as captured by the masterly Édouard Vuillard, a prominent figure of the Post-Impressionist movement and the Nabis group. Created between 1907 and 1908, this artwork delves into the subtleties of character and the complexity of human expression through Vuillard's distinctive style. The portrait showcases Suzanne Desprès, a renowned actress of the time, dressed in her theatrical attire. Notable is her focused gaze and the slight tilt of her head which, combined with her attire, hints at a persona accustomed to the dramatic and expressive. Vuillard's use of loose brush strokes and a subdued yet rich color palette captures not only the physical likeness but also the introspective nature of Desprès.Vuillard's genius in this work lies in his ability to convey a narrative through minimal visual elements—the crisp outline of the hat, the vivid red and blue accents against the cream background, and the softened features of Desprès’ face all contribute to a poignant image that invites viewers to look beyond the surface."Suzanne Desprès" offers a snapshot of both the actress's public persona and a glimpse of her private self, presented through the empathetic eyes of Vuillard.

Jean-Édouard Vuillard (11 November 1868 – 21 June 1940) was a French painter, decorative artist, and printmaker. From 1891 through 1900, Vuillard was a prominent member of the avant garde artistic group Les Nabis, creating paintings that assembled areas of pure color. His interior scenes, influenced by Japanese prints, explored the spatial effects of flattened planes of color, pattern, and form. As a decorative artist, Vuillard painted theater sets, panels for interior decoration, and designed plates and stained glass. After 1900, when the Nabis broke up, Vuillard adopted a more realistic style, approaching landscapes and interiors with greater detail and vivid colors. In the 1920s and 1930s, he painted portraits of prominent figures in French industry and the arts in their familiar settings.

Vuillard was influenced by Paul Gauguin, among other post-impressionist painters.
