More about this artwork

Édouard Vuillard, a French artist and a prominent figure in the intimate Post-Impressionist movement, presents a compelling portrait of Madame Delierre in his work, “Portrait de Madame Delierre, dit Symphonie en rouge” (circa 1901). In this painting, Vuillard employs his characteristic rich, textured brushwork and a vivid palette that borders on the abstract. The central figure, Madame Delierre, is seated comfortably in a plush, ornate interior. Her attire, a striking red dress with white lace detail, resonates with the dominant warm hues that envelop the room, creating a visual symphony of reds. The title "Symphony in Red" aptly captures the almost musical flow of color and form across the canvas.Vuillard's attention to textural details can be seen in the intricate patterns of the carpet and the ornamental elements on the walls, which include framed pictures that add depth and context to the interior setting. The surrounding furniture, depicted in a mix of earthy and vibrant tones, curates a domestic scene that is at once personal and expressive. The painting not only showcases Vuillard's mastery of color and texture but also reflects his ability to infuse everyday scenes with a sense of warmth and emotional depth. Through the languid pose of Madame Delierre and the immersive environment, Vuillard invites viewers into a private world, rendered with a palette that sings of comfort and familiarity."Portrait de Madame Delierre, dit Symphonie en rouge" is a testament to Vuillard's ongoing exploration into the nuanced interplay between color, texture, and domestic life.

Jean-Édouard Vuillard (11 November 1868 – 21 June 1940) was a French painter, decorative artist, and printmaker. From 1891 through 1900, Vuillard was a prominent member of the avant garde artistic group Les Nabis, creating paintings that assembled areas of pure color. His interior scenes, influenced by Japanese prints, explored the spatial effects of flattened planes of color, pattern, and form. As a decorative artist, Vuillard painted theater sets, panels for interior decoration, and designed plates and stained glass. After 1900, when the Nabis broke up, Vuillard adopted a more realistic style, approaching landscapes and interiors with greater detail and vivid colors. In the 1920s and 1930s, he painted portraits of prominent figures in French industry and the arts in their familiar settings.

Vuillard was influenced by Paul Gauguin, among other post-impressionist painters.
