More about this artwork

Édouard Vuillard's "Les Toits Mauves" (1909) captures the everyday charm and sublime tranquility of urban landscapes with a unique, intimate perspective. Framed by the heavy skies of an overcast day, the painting offers a view over the rooftops of a bustling town. The soft and muted color palette, consisting primarily of greys, greens, and subtle mauve hues, evokes a sense of calm and reflective mood.In this captivating piece, the foreground is marked by lush greenery, a somewhat abstract representation of nature, leading the viewer's eye towards the dense cluster of buildings in the middle ground. The houses, with their distinctive mauve-colored roofs, appear closely packed together, creating a tapestry of urban life and architectural density.Vuillard, renowned for his intimate genre paintings and his association with the Nabis, an avant-garde group, here portrays a less domestic and more expansive landscape. However, he retains a touch of the personal by capturing this scene in his uniquely textural style. The brushstrokes are loose and expressive, suffusing the composition with a lively atmosphere, despite the overcast sky."Les Toits Mauves" is more than just a geographical depiction; it is an emotional rendering that invites viewers to ponder the serene moments of urban life.

Jean-Édouard Vuillard (11 November 1868 – 21 June 1940) was a French painter, decorative artist, and printmaker. From 1891 through 1900, Vuillard was a prominent member of the avant garde artistic group Les Nabis, creating paintings that assembled areas of pure color. His interior scenes, influenced by Japanese prints, explored the spatial effects of flattened planes of color, pattern, and form. As a decorative artist, Vuillard painted theater sets, panels for interior decoration, and designed plates and stained glass. After 1900, when the Nabis broke up, Vuillard adopted a more realistic style, approaching landscapes and interiors with greater detail and vivid colors. In the 1920s and 1930s, he painted portraits of prominent figures in French industry and the arts in their familiar settings.

Vuillard was influenced by Paul Gauguin, among other post-impressionist painters.
