More about this artwork

Welcome to our visual arts feature on George Barbier's fascinating piece, "Le Gout des Laques" from 1920. This exquisite painting stands out for its compelling depiction of Art Deco aesthetics combined with an unmistakable influence of Japanese art.In "Le Gout des Laques," Barbier masterfully blends vibrant color, meticulous detail, and a distinct sense of style to create an evocative scene. The artwork features two elegantly dressed women in an exotic, stylized setting that embodies the luxurious and ornamental characteristics famous in Art Deco art. The title, which translates to "The Taste for Lacquer," hints at the appreciation for Asian art and craftsmanship, which heavily influenced European decorative art during this era.One woman stands poised and statuesque, wearing a chic dress with a bold, swirling pattern and a headpiece that enhance her glamorous demeanor. Her accessories, with dangling beads and bracelets, complement her striking pose. The other woman is depicted kneeling, dressed in a flowing, richly decorated gown, engaged in the delicate handling of a lotus flower, a symbol often associated with beauty and purity in Eastern cultures. The background is a lavishly decorated screen adorned with cranes and trees, elements often found in traditional Asian landscapes, set against a vivid red floor that enhances the dramatic and luxurious feel of the scene.Barbier’s work is not just a display of fashionable elegance but also an intercultural dialogue, reflecting Western fascination with the aesthetics and philosophy heralding from the East. This painting not only captures the visual opulence of the time but also serves as a testament to the cultural exchanges that enrich art and society.
