More about this artwork

The enchanting painting "Midi Sur L’eau" by George Barbier, painted in 1914, captures a serene and intimate moment by the water's edge. This artwork, a shining example of the Art Deco style that Barbier was renowned for, portrays a delicate interplay of elegance, artistry, and simplicity. In the painting, we witness a graceful woman and a man in a boat. The woman, draped in a flowing dress adorned with floral designs, stands poised as if caught in a gentle dance. Her outfit is complemented by a chic headpiece and delicate accessories, embodying the fashion of the early 20th century. The use of pastel shades and soft lines enhance the light and airy feel of the scene. On the other hand, the man, seated and partially facing away from the viewer, is in simpler attire—a polka dotted shirt paired with dark pants—illustrating a casual yet stylish garment of the era. His engagement in steering the boat anchors the scene in a moment of quiet activity. The background, dotted with willowy branches hanging over them, frames the subjects and adds a sense of intimacy and seclusion. This careful composition of natural elements and human interaction creates a peaceful tableau, inviting viewers to ponder the calm and contemplative mood of a midday escape on the water.
