More about this artwork

We are delighted to present "Le Goût des Laques," a compelling illustration by the renowned French artist, George Barbier, created in 1920. This striking work is an exquisite example of Barbier's affinity for combining Art Deco aesthetics with influences from the Far East. The painting features two elegantly dressed figures amidst a beautifully detailed, exotic backdrop. The woman standing on the left is clothed in a stylish, flowing gown, accentuated with ornamental designs that evoke the sumptuous textures of Eastern garments. Her pose exudes confidence and grace, hands adorned with bracelets, one holding a string of beads elegantly drooped alongside her dress. The seated figure, a man, is similarly festooned in a richly detailed robe. He is engaged in the delicate task of tending to a blooming lotus flower, a symbol often associated with purity and beauty in Eastern cultures. The background is a tapestry of dark panels filled with intricate motifs of clouds and mystical landscapes, likely inspired by traditional Asian lacquer work, which involves layering and polishing several coats of lacquer to achieve a deep, lustrous finish. A majestic crane stands between the figures, further enhancing the Asiatic ambiance with its presence."Le Goût des Laques" not only showcases George Barbier's mastery of illustration and design but also reflects the West's fascination with Asian art and culture during the early 20th century.
