More about this artwork

This painting by Charles Demuth, titled "Red Cabbages, Rhubarb and Orange," is a vibrant and detailed still life that showcases the artist's skill in watercolor. The composition focuses on two deeply hued red cabbages, their rich purple and magenta tones beautifully rendered to highlight the natural texture and layers of the leaves. Complementing the cabbages, there are stalks of rhubarb with their characteristic green and reddish-pink hues, adding a nice contrast to the darker tones of the cabbages. At the center of the composition, partly nestled between the vegetables, is an orange. Its bright, citrusy color pops against the darker reds and purples, drawing the eye and providing a balance to the overall color palette. The subtlety of the background, which appears to be a soft, muted white, ensures that the focus remains on the vibrancy and detail of the fruits and vegetables.Demuth's mastery in capturing the textures and colors of his subjects is evident and makes the painting feel alive and fresh, almost as if one could reach out and touch the produce. This artwork not only celebrates the beauty of everyday objects but also demonstrates the artist’s precision and the potent use of watercolors to convey depth and realism.

Charles Demuth (1883-1935) was one of the leading artists during the American Modernism era. He was distinguished for intimate watercolors and cubic architectural paintings. Demuth studied art at Académie Julian in Paris, where he was welcomed into the avant-garde art scene and met other American Cubism artists like Marsden Hartley. His watercolor figures have a weightless and surrealistic character with a sensitive linear style, in which he illustrated plays and novels such as Émile Zola's Nana. He also depicted an evolving gay scene of encounters at bath houses through watercolors for his close friends, like the "Turkish Bath", works that now are of great historical significance. Demuth later employed a cubist technique by painting industrial factories with complex structural planes, leading him to becoming a pioneer for the precisionist movement.
