More about this artwork

George Barbier, renowned for his lavish illustrations that epitomize the Art Deco movement, presents an enchanting visual narrative titled "Mademoiselle Spinelly chez elle" (Mademoiselle Spinelly at Home). This 1921 artwork stands out as a beautiful exploration of elegance, culture, and artistic fusion. At the heart of the composition is Mademoiselle Spinelly, depicted in a graceful pose beside a grand, ornate sculpture of a seated Buddha, which underscores the influence of Orientalism in early 20th-century art and design. The Buddha, detailed and serene, adds a spiritual and exotic depth to the scene, contrasting starkly with the Western style and fashion portrayed by Spinelly.Mademoiselle Spinelly herself is dressed in a vibrant green dress that complements her poised demeanor and the striking decor. Her attire is finished with chic accessories, including a stylish belt and a long necklace, which showcase the period's fashion sensibilities and Barbier’s attention to detail. The backdrop consists of vertically striped wallpaper, which lends a feeling of height and modernity to the room. The inclusion of a small houseplant on the left and a resting dog on a cushion on the right side bring elements of life and homeliness to the otherwise stylized interior. This painting is not only a portrayal of an individual’s refined lifestyle but also a testament to the period's fascination with blending different cultural elements.
