More about this artwork

We proudly present "Sertigtal im Winter," an exquisite painting by the renowned Expressionist artist, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. Created in 1924, this artwork encapsulates a vivid, dynamic portrayal of the Sertig Valley, nestled in the Swiss Alps.In "Sertigtal im Winter," Kirchner's bold use of color and swift brushstrokes capture the rugged beauty of the snowy landscape. The painting is a symphony of blues, whites, and splashes of darker shades, illustrating the depth and texture of the snow-covered valley. Central in the scene are winding trails that draw the viewer's eyes across the canvas, suggesting the meandering paths of skiers or the flow of the icy river. The backdrop is dominated by towering mountains, their peaks etched against the sky in sweeping lines that convey both their majesty and the brisk, alpine atmosphere. Interposed are clusters of pine trees, their dark silhouettes stark against the snow and sky, creating a contrast that is both striking and harmonious.Foreground elements include quaint, rustic cabins, their forms simplified yet suggestive of human habitation and warmth amidst the cold. These structures, along with the silhouetted figures, give life to the painting, creating a narrative of winter activity and mountain life that is beautifully frozen in time.Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's "Sertigtal im Winter" not only showcases his signature style of expressionism but also invites viewers to experience the serene and invigorating essence of the Swiss winter landscape.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) was one of the most important German Expressionist painters. He was a co-founder of Die Brücke, a group of German expressionist artists formed in Dresden in 1905. Die Brücke and Kirchner took inspiration from Vincent Van Gogh and Edvard Munch, as well as African and Oceanic art. They used woodblock printing as a medium to showcase their signature style: flat, unrealistic images with vivid colors. The recurring themes in Kirchner's artworks included exotic cultures, faraway landscapes, self-portraits, dancers and Berlin street life. His paintings and prints effectively portrayed non-European cultures despite the fact that he never traveled outside of Europe.
