More about this artwork

Jan Matejko, the renowned 19th-century Polish artist, is often celebrated for his vivid historical scenes. However, his prowess in portraiture is equally compelling, as evidenced by the intense "Portrait of Kazimierz Stankiewicz" created in 1857. This painting captures the stern and dignified demeanor of Kazimierz Stankiewicz, a figure not widely known but clearly respected by Matejko to merit such a portrayal. The portrait focuses on Stankiewicz's face and upper torso, set against a muted, nondescript background that accentuates his visage. His expression is serious, marked by sharp, penetrating eyes and a notably firm mouth. The subject's robust mustache and the dark clothing contribute to the overall solemnity and weight of the character conveyed through the brush strokes.Matejko's skill in rendering textures and details is evident in the lifelike representation of the skin and the delicate gleam of the small pendant, possibly a symbol of honor or personal significance, hanging from Stankiewicz's neck. The choice of a restrained color palette allows the viewer to focus entirely on the subject's facial expression and the subtle hints of his personality and status. This painting not only highlights Matejko's ability to capture the essence of his subjects with emotional depth but also serves as a window into the era's social and cultural milieu.

Jan Alojzy Matejko was a Polish painter, a leading 19th-century exponent of history painting, known for depicting nodal events from Polish history. His works include large scale oil paintings such as Rejtan (1866), the Union of Lublin (1869), the Astronomer Copernicus, or Conversations with God (1873), or the Battle of Grunwald (1878). He was the author of numerous portraits, a gallery of Polish monarchs in book form, and murals in St. Mary's Basilica, Kraków. He is considered by many as the most celebrated Polish painter, and sometimes as the "national painter" of Poland.
