More about this artwork

We are delighted to spotlight a deeply personal artwork by Jan Matejko, one of Poland's most renowned painters, titled "Portrait of Franciszek Matejko, Artist’s Father." Created in 1877, this striking portrait features the artist's father, Franciszek Matejko, captured with an introspective and solemn expression. The painting masterfully portrays Franciszek with a nuanced realism. His visage, marked by age and experience, reveals a complex persona. His eyes, slightly turned away from the viewer, along with the subtle lines etched around them, give a glimpse into his contemplative nature. The artist's use of light accentuates the textures of his father’s skin and the glossy sheen on his dark, formal attire, enhancing the overall solemnity and dignity of the portrait.Jan Matejko's ability to convey emotion through portraiture is evident in this work. The detailed brushwork and the rich, warm tones of the background elevate the subject, emphasizing his presence and the emotional depth of the composition. This painting not only serves as an homage to his father but also as a testament to Matejko's skill in capturing humane and historical narratives through his art.

Jan Alojzy Matejko was a Polish painter, a leading 19th-century exponent of history painting, known for depicting nodal events from Polish history. His works include large scale oil paintings such as Rejtan (1866), the Union of Lublin (1869), the Astronomer Copernicus, or Conversations with God (1873), or the Battle of Grunwald (1878). He was the author of numerous portraits, a gallery of Polish monarchs in book form, and murals in St. Mary's Basilica, Kraków. He is considered by many as the most celebrated Polish painter, and sometimes as the "national painter" of Poland.
