More about this artwork

Gustave Caillebotte captures the tranquil essence of a leisurely day on the river in his remarkable painting, "Skiffs" from 1877. This artwork encapsulates the serenity and gentle rhythm of rowing, a beloved pastime during the late 19th century in France. The composition masterfully depicts two slender boats gliding across placid waters, each crewed by rowers adorned with wide-brimmed straw hats, protecting them against the gleam of the overhead sun.The foreground is dominated by one skiff, with a rower whose focused expression suggests both determination and ease. The dappled light filtering through the trees on the banks creates a play of light and shadows on the water and the rowers, imbuing the scene with a lively but restful feel. Carefully executed brushstrokes render the shimmering reflections on the water, a signature feature in Caillebotte's oeuvre that adds a realist yet poetic quality to his depiction of natural scenes.

Gustave Caillebotte (1848–1894) was a French painter who combined impressionist and academic styles in his artworks. Despite the fact that he is considered a great impressionist artist today, his posthumous reputation was not as significant. Most of his paintings were kept by his family and not exhibited nor reproduced until the late 20th century. His artworks depict scenes from Parisian streets, modern urban environments, as well as rural country scenes and flowers.
